Bangladesh Rice Research Institute
(BRRI) was established in October, 1970 in Joydebpur, Gazipur. The Institute
has an outstanding contribution to the food security of Bangladesh. So far it
has developed 67 high yielding rice varieties including four hybrid ones.
Moreover, these varieties are cultivated in about 80 percent of the total rice areas
and contribute almost 91 percent of total rice production of the country.
BRRI is a major component of the
National Agricultural Research System (NARS) of Bangladesh, dealing with
research and development in relation to rice production. Rice research started
in this part of the sub-continent in 1910. However, the modern era of rice
research and development started in the mid-sixties. The demand for rice was
high in the past and it has been increasing because of increasing population
size day by day. Realizing the importance of rice in the socio-economy and
politics, an autonomous organization in the name of East Pakistan Rice Research
Institute (EPRRI) was established on 1 October 1970 with an area of 76.82
hectare at Joydebpur, Gazipur; 36 km north of the capital city-Dhaka of
Bangladesh.
